In a virtual event held by Ministry of Environment on Tuesday, Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed launched the ‘Multihazard Risk Atlas of the Maldives’. The atlas is composed of Geography—Volume I, Climate and Geophysical Hazards—Volume II, Economy and Demographics—Volume III, Biodiversity—Volume IV, and Summary—Volume V.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister highlighted that this atlas will help make informed decisions based on climate risks and geophysical hazards for future development projects. Minister also said this will be an important contributor to building confidence with partners providing funds for projects related to climate change and ensure their funds are being utilized for essential purposes.
The five-volume atlas is a major output of the project “Establishing a National Geospatial Database for Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation into Development Activities and Policies in Maldives” under the Asian Development Bank’s regional knowledge and support (capacity development) technical assistance Action on Climate Change in South Asia (2013–2018).
Ministry informs that the atlas was created on Geographic Information System (GIS) platform, and that the information is available through its website.
