Special Envoy for Climate Change Meets Maldives Based Foreign Diplomats

 
Ms. Sabra Noordeen, the Maldives' Special Envoy for Climate Change, met with foreign ambassadors and leaders of international organizations in Maldives this week to discuss the Maldives' climate goals and concerns. 

The climate catastrophe is a fundamental pillar of the Maldives' foreign policy and presents an existential issue for the country. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a study on Monday showing that climate change is threatening every area on the planet. 

Ms. Noordeen met with H.E. Mr. Sunjay Sudir, India's High Commissioner to the Maldives, Pakistan's High Commissioner, H.E. Vice Admiral Ather Mukhtar, Japanese Ambassador, H.E. Ms Keiko Yanai and the Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), H.E. Ms. Vera Hakim.  

Ms. Noordeen advocated for a higher decrease in global emissions in different discussions conducted throughout the week, emphasizing the need for more ambition to combat the effects of climate change. She also spoke on the difficulties vulnerable and tiny island states, such as the Maldives, have in obtaining financial and technical assistance for adaptation. 

 The Special Envoy also mentioned the Maldives' commitment to reach Net Zero emissions by 2030, as well as the country's plans to considerably boost renewable energy output through solar investments.
