The Walls of Stelco Come Alive with the Timeline of Events that Led to Maldivian Independence

Independence Day in the Maldives is marked to celebrate the pursuit of victory as a nation that is governed without the influence of any external party. Since July 26, 1965, the day has been a reminder of the patriotic faith in Islam and the brotherly bond of unity among us.

The events that led to our independence take us back several centuries, when the Portuguese tried to invade the country in the 1550s. In 1887, Maldives was officially recorded to have a ‘British Protectorate’ status, giving the archipelago military protection and non-interfered local administration. Over the years that followed, a multitude of reforms was seen at the authoritarian level until a new understanding was signed with the British Government in 1968, what we know today as gaining Independence.

A group of talented local artists had come together to showcase these dramatic events one after the other, in the form of wall murals drawn on the walls of STELCO, facing Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Male’. The fallen heroes of our nation had shed blood and tears to ensure that our nation remains together, portrayed beautifully by the artists. The surprise lies in scanning the first five scenes on the walls with the ARTIVIVE application, and witnessing the magnificent moments come to life.

On Tuesday, the Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage visited the site and enjoyed the art.
