HDC Opens Application for the Community Urban Farming Project

Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in urban areas.

Community Urban Farming Project is an initiative by Housing Development Corporation (HDC) formulated as an urban agricultural incubation program targeted towards the younger generation of aspiring farmers residing at the reclaimed extension of Male’ City, Hulhumale’. It will be conducted in collaboration with Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The project falls in line with several strategic plans drafted the current administration; mainly focusing on reducing the dependency on imported food and beverage products and also creating productive green spaces especially in urban area. It will also be beneficial to the participants as it creates an opportunity to secure an additional income. The project will be carried out under 3 phases and is set commence next year. A total of 19,871.26 square foot is allocated for the project at the Green Strip 2 locate at Neighborhood 3 of Hulhumale’ Phase 1. This will be divided into 16 individual plots whereas 03 farmers will be assigned to each plot meaning the project will capacitate a total of 48 farmers. 40% of the slots will be allocated for women, 30% to disabled and the youth and the remaining 30% for the general public. Selected applicants will receive training before commencing physical work at the farming sites.
