The Foreign Secretary of the Republic of Maldives, Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, participated in the virtual significant event on the Action Coalition on Feminist Action for Climate Justice today. The remarkable event was held virtually at the Generation Equality Forum in Paris from June 30 to July 2, 2021.
The Generation Equality Forum was organized by UN Women and co-chaired by the French and Mexican governments in cooperation with civil society and youth organizations. Of the six action coalitions formed during the Forum, the Maldives and Costa Rica have partnered with the Feminist Action Coalition for Climate Justice.
In his statement, Foreign Minister Ghafoor described the Maldives' commitments under the four actions outlined in the Feminist Action for Climate Justice master plan. He stated that the Maldives commits to expanding the fiscal authorities given to local councils and women’s development councils towards climate-related funding.
Furthermore, Maldives will be increasing women in leadership and policy-formulation positions by building capacity through tools and resources. In order to achieve this, the capacity at community-level and or fundamental actors will be developed to engage in climate related planning processes.
Moreover, there is a dire need to improve data collection towards exploring climate impacts in terms of loss and damage, specifically the impacts on women and women-led enterprises.
