32 Islands Pledge to Strengthen Waste Management Systems

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has said that ‘waste as a resource’ policy is important to maintain the quality of life in the islands. She stated so in the agreement signing ceremony of the Greater Male Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project between the Ministry and 32 other islands.

The islands that joined the project are from the atolls of Kaafu, Alif Alif, Alif Dhaalu, and Vaavu that belong to Zone 3. the ceremony was held yesterday and alongside the Minister, Presidents of the Island Councils signed the agreements mutually.

As part of the project, islands without proper waste disposal systems will be provided with facilities – 15 of the islands are getting brand new waste management centers while 11 of them will have the existing centers upgraded with the latest facilities.

Minister Shauna explained that the project outlines the implementation of modern technology in safely and sustainably managing waste in the Greater Male Area. It also frees up individual islands in the zone to create and maintain the beautiful natural environment by handling the waste management on the islands.

The initiative is funded by Asias Development Bank, J.F.P.R.R., and T.S.S. It will be carried out in 2 major phases which includes the development of climate and disaster resilient waste transport and management systems on the islands, and strengthening the institutional capacity for the task within the island. Moreover, awareness programs for the public will be carried out.
