Are You Brave Enough to Report Image-Based Abuse?

By definition, image-based abuse maybe considered as the inappropriate use of one’s intimate and personal pictures on social platforms as a means of demeaning the person and taking revenge. It can also be the blackmailing for inappropriate benefits in exchange for not ‘leaking’ such pictures on the internet. Did you know that these are just two of the many forms of image-based abuse?

In an interactive and information session held on CyberRakkaa on Clubhouse, Women in Tech, Maldives Police and Ooredoo discussed in depth about cyber security and prevention of image-based abuse. From what I have learnt in the session, this is a far more serious crime that is happening beyond our control in the society – to someone we know, someone we love, to us. And whether knowingly or unknowingly, us letting it happen is an equivalent crime.

Panelists included Nada Shareef from Thibaa Psychilogy, Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim from Edith Cowan University, Sub-Inspector Adam Naveedh from Maldives Police Service and Naafiz Abdulla from Ooredoo Maldives. They interacted with the audience about image-based abuse, how to report, deal with the trauma, challenges in addressing the issue and preventive measures on Cyber-crimes in the Maldives. The session ended with a Q&A with the audience.
