Chinese Company Assigned to Build Waste Transfer Stations in Male and Villimale

An official agreement has been signed between Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, Aminath Shauna and the General Manager of CSEC in the Maldives, Zang Tao commissioning the company to build waste transfer stations in Male and Villimale.

China State Construction Engineering Corporation is a global investment and construction group hailing from China. Their dominant presence can be found around the globe in areas of investment and development, construction and engineering as well as survey and design.

The project handed over by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology includes building waste transfer stations that will hold waste in containers prior to transfer to Thilafushi from both Male and Villimale. Garbage will be categorized and put into specific containers in order to negate the safety and hygiene related issues during transportation. This system is also believed to bring a permanent solution to the disposal of waste into the sea from these areas.

In collaboration with the Asian Development Bank, the Ministry is taking up multiple initiatives under the Environmental Improvement and Wate Management Project in the Greater Male Area. The project handed over to CSEC falls under phase one of the planned projects. The project is valued at USD 11,868,751.66 and MVR 600,000. It is scheduled to be completed within 1 year and 4 months.

The Ministry aims to develop sustainable waste management systems in the Greater Male Area and islands in Zone 3 under the Environmental Improvement and Wate Management Project.
