ARC has condemned in the highest regard the brutal killing of a 13-year-old boy in Hulhumale last night. The shocking news has sent waves of concern and anger among the public and ARC has called on the authorities for an immediate and transparent investigation into the case.
The increasing number of cases of violence against children must be immediately ended, says ARC. Many issues and flaws in the child protection system in the country has led to a number of these cases resulting in fatalities. Perpetrators of such heinous crimes must be brought to justice with prompt action in order to save the next child being victimized.
ARC stresses on the immediate need to work on the system exacerbated by deficiencies in law enforcement, and the judicial and social sectors tasked with the promotion and protection of the rights of children in the Maldives. If not, there will be more challenges to bringing justice amid the rising complexities of such cases which are deeply unnerving.
ARC reiterates its commitment to continue its efforts to work with all relevant stakeholders to safeguard the rights of children across the Maldives. ARC also sends heartfelt condolences to family and friends of the minor who had been reportedly missing since Sunday.
