“The Whole Nation Owes You a Debt of Gratitude.” - President Solih

In the face of disaster, Maldivians choose to unite and fight together to overcome the hurdle. Be it a Tsunami or a sports victory, unity runs in our blood. In these lines, many came forward as volunteers at different stages of the ongoing pandemic and worked alongside the authorities in various capacities to curb the recent covid surges.

Earlier last month, the Maldives recorded the peak of covid cases in the country, with death tolls surprising us by the minute. Noted as the most dangerous so far, the accelerated spread strained our already challenged and limited healthcare facilities and workers who have been serving at the frontline since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020.

In May 2021, authorities were forced to call out for help in managing the cases popping up in every direction. Youth across the country stood in unity and answered calls for volunteers, reaching over a thousand applications in the first two days of announcement. New volunteers were deployed at the Hulhumale Medical Facility as required.

With strict restrictions in place and a patriotic effort, the past month has seen massive improvement in the covid cases being reported in the Greater Male Region. Reflecting on this progress, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed his sincere gratitude for the incredible efforts shown by volunteers during an exceptionally difficult phase of the pandemic. He stated that the whole nation owed them a debt of gratitude for their selflessness.

Indeed, their efforts helped lighten the burden on the healthcare workers stationed at the facility and the patients as much too. Without our volunteers, this pandemic will be worse without a doubt.
