New Regulations to Keep in Mind About Standardization of Biodegradable Plastic Bags

Starting June 15, 2021, new regulations have been imposed on the import of plastic bags in efforts to standardize the use of biodegradable plastic bags in the country. Here, we have simplified the regulations that must be in check, which classifies plastic bags as biodegradable and accpeted for use.

Classifications:

  • Bags must be prepared in accordance with the EN13432:2000 standard and the heavy metal content in the bag must not exceed the set limits
  • At least 90% of the contents used to make the bag must be organic materials
  • The non-biodegradable fraction of the materials used must not exceed 5%

Labelling:
The following content must be printed on the outside of each bag.

  • Expiry date
  • Decomposition time
  • Biodegradable additives
  • Production logo of producer or importer
  • EPA authorized certificate number

Permit from Environment Protection Agency
A permit request must be submitted to EPA for approval of the import/production and use of the plastic bags. Along with the form, at least 3 samples of the bag must also be submitted. The request must be supported by official/original documents issued no longer than 6 months prior, which states the results of testing against EN13432:2000. Full details of the supplier/producer must also be attached with the request.
