Strict Action Will be Taken Against Coconut Palm Extraction Without Permit – EPA

Environment Protection Agency has issued a statement regarding multiple requests submitted to the authority requesting for the extraction and transportation of coconut palms from inhabited islands to sites under construction for new resort developments.

It has been brought to the agency’s attention that despite laws clearly stating the requirement of a permit from the agency for such action, many contractors have been extracting and transporting coconut palms to sites unlawfully.

EPA states that only island council approval will not be enough to back up the action. Therefore, the agency reminds resort developers, contractors and island councils to ensure the following documentation is approved beforehand.

  • E.I.A Decision Statement or approval documentation issued under the laws related to coconut palm extraction, transport, and replantation for the project.
  • The number of coconut palms that can be relocated for the project mentioned in the document
  • The area specified for the coconut palm extraction
  • Proper plantation soil arranged for the project

The permit issued by EPA must be available for inspection with the contractors, and on the vehicles or vessels used for the transportation. If not, EPA is authorized to take halt the operation and take strict action against those involved in the projects.
