Janssen and Moderna Vaccines Approved for Administration in the Maldives

In our battle against the Covid19 pandemic, the biggest breakthrough has been producing vaccines at a short period of time. Emergency approvals have been given to several versions, given the severity and the urgency created by the virus across the globe.

Currently in the Maldives, 4 different vaccines are approved for administration. Yesterday, 2 more vaccines were authorized by Maldives Food and Drug Authority for use in the country. The approval is in reference to ‘Restricted Use in Emergency Situation’ guidelines and can be administered to the eligible public over 18 years of age.

They are:
Covid19 Vaccine Moderna

  • A Spanish production, by Moderna Biotech Spain
  • Approved by WHO and listed for Emergency Use
  • Approved and administered in 49 countries worldwide

Ad26.COV2-S (recombinant) COVID19 Vaccine Janssen

  • A production of Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson and Johnson
  • Approved by WHO and listed for Emergency Use
  • Approved and administered in 42 countries worldwide

The authorizations were given after full investigation into the administrative and technical aspect of the import, storage, use, and effects of the vaccines. MFDA also consulted the National Pharmaceutical Board regarding the approval.

Both vaccines are required to be stored at temperatures between –25 and –15C. Hence, a cold chain must be observed at every stage of dealing with the vaccine administration. MFDA will be closely monitoring the use of the vaccine in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, and Health Protection Agency.

As with all vaccines, a certain degree of reaction is expected post administration of the vaccines. However, vaccination is the strongest layer of protection we have against Covid19 at the moment.
