Travel to Islands Banned Except for These Reasons

One of the first restriction of movements imposed in efforts of controlling the virus spread across the Maldives was banning inter-island travel. Still currently in place, measures are stricter and HPA has announced further guidelines to follow while travelling to islands from the Greater Male’ area.

Travel to islands from Male’ will only be allowed under the following circumstances:

  • Travelling back to the island after trip to Male’ for medical reasons. This includes those who are caregivers of the patients on such trips.
  • Unable to live in Male’ due to various challenges, and wish to migrate back to the island
  • Completion of education in Male’ and therefore changing back to the island. This DOES NOT include school holidays or temporary discontinuation of physical classes.
  • Certain family responsibilities to immediate relatives.

Those who wish to travel to islands under the above-stated circumstances, their travel request must be applied for via Haalubelun Portal. An approval letter for the travel issued by the council of the respective island must also be uploaded to the portal by the council itself. A mandatory 14-day quarantine is imposed on the travelers upon reaching their destination and they will only be allowed outside once a negative PCR test is produced after completion of the quarantine duration.
