Muraka Kudhin Inspires Scouts Around the Globe

18th Male’ Scout Group, the Muhyiddin Scout Group’s flagship project Muraka Kudhin is one of the most awesome environment awareness projects currently ongoing in the Maldives. Undertaken in collaboration with Save the Beach Maldives (STBM), Moodhu Bulha Dive Centre (MBDC) & Hertfordshire Scouts, the initiative encourages and empowers children to participate actively in reef rehabilitation and restoration efforts in Villimale’.

Focused on educating the young participants about the importance of a healthy house reef on every island and their role in ensuring this, Muraka Kudhin advocates sustainable coral reef restoration through coral regeneration projects carried out in various phases. Batches of students are limited so that focus can be more on learning by practice while in the waters themselves.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Scouts compiled an interesting list of initiatives by their troops across the globe that are playing key roles in restoring our ecosystems and ensuring a healthy planet. Being included on this list has highlighted the inspiration and importance of the Muraka Kudhin Project by Muhiyiddin Scouts.

Since 2019, the project has been showing promising growth since more and more scouts are now volunteering for the initiative. Currently at its second phase, reef rehabilitation work is ongoing without much observable changes taking place on the reef yet. However, the scope of learning and understanding the reed health through regular data collection is valueless.

Currently there are no observable changes to the reef but the learning process is immense. Additionally, the continuous monitoring and data collection expands our understanding of the reef health. Muraka Kudhin is the perfect setting for children to push their limits in the waters, and learn about our fragile ecosystem while having fun. They are going to become the sustainable environment ambassadors of tomorrow.
