To support the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into the society, State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) initiated their ‘Fahi Furusathu’ program under which they will be educating job-related skills and providing paid internships to inmates released on parole. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between STELCO, Maldives Correctional Service and Ministry of Home Affairs on 08th October 2020 in relation to this, in a small-scale ceremony.
The main goal of this initiative by STELCO is to pave a way of earning for a living by persons being released from prison owing to the fact that most ex-convicts reoffend due to sociological prejudices restricting them from securing employment, leaving them with little chances to earn money. This is one of the several projects underway to transform ex-convicts as contributive and responsible citizens of the community.
Whilst speaking during the ceremony, Minster of Home Affairs, His Excellency Sheikh Imran Abdulla noted that this was a major responsibility undertaken by STELCO and appealed state owned companies and private companies to follow their footsteps as actions of Corporation Social Responsibility (CSR).
This is praise-worthy initiative by STELCO and we applaud them for it. The program has instilled hope of a different future for ex-convicts and their families, friends and loved ones.
