Special Extension Considered for Work Permit Holders to Enter Maldives

In an official announcement, the Ministry of Economic Development has extended the 90-day period allocated for work permit holders to enter the country in light of the ongoing travel restrictions in place. Due to upsurges of Covid cases in countries around the world, Maldives has considered relieving the burden by allowing a special extension service.

Currently, foreigners who are allowed to work in the Maldives are given a work permit, which was previously known as employment approval. Within 90 days of the approval of the permit, foreigners must travel and settle in the Maldives. However, if they are challenged by travel restrictions, they can now apply for an extension of the period by emailing to wp@trade.gov.mv. The request has to be sent latest before 48 hours prior to the due date of the 90-days allocated.
