The Largest Planned City Developments in the Maldives to Embrace a Smart City Concept

The talk of smart cities is not new but the concept being integrated into the upcoming developments in the Maldives to be made available for the benefit of the public is surely something that sparks interest. Home to the most densely populated capital city in the world, the Maldives is in dire need of advanced infrastructure in order to facilitate the growing demands of a convenient and sustainable lifestyle.

Housing Development Corporation is the leading authority that is currently overlooking one of the most ambitious urban development projects in the nation. Hulhumale', which has now expanded to a Phase Two, is the culmination of the island nation’s efforts to reimagine its focus towards being resilient, economically and environmentally.

An anticipated population of 240,000 people will be housed in Hulhumale’ alone, upon the completion of the development. It is essential to ensure that such a large population can have efficient access to basic needs such as housing, health care, transportation, education, employment, and more in the urban setting.

Continuously working to find new and better ways to make Hulhumale a world-class smart city, HDC has expanded its efforts in building smart infrastructure needed to facilitate the aspects of the concept. It has now begun the process of constructing telecommunication towers and rooftop poles amid the Hiyaa Flats in Phase Two. The towers will ease the telecommunication challenges in the heavily constructed residential flats.

So far, an environment friendly monopole tower has been completed in the area which will facilitate better mobile coverage. Furthermore, four angular towers being built in the area is expected to reach completion by the end of this month.

Reflecting on the global advancements from major hubs around the world, the smart city concept provides promising solutions to interconnecting the services with the help of internet and technology. Cities in America, United Kingdom, Denmark, Japan, and even our neighbor India, have shown the growth potential of a smart city in making positive economic and social impacts on the lifestyle of its residents.
