Tourism Ministry Joins Forces with Local Island Councils and Cities in High Hopes of Developing Local Tourism Hubs Across the Maldives

Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has held a virtual meeting with the newly elected 18 Presidents of Atoll Councils and 4 City Mayors to introduce and discuss the Tourism Diversification and Localization project included in the government's strategic plan. Alongside Minister Mausoom, Deputy Minister, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Director General, and members of the project team took part in the conference.  

Minister Mausoom assured councils that continuous support will be provided by the Ministry in all efforts to facilitate the direct and indirect benefits of tourism to islanders. This will include practical support to councils, and strategizing on strategizing on allocating tourism zones in the Land Use Plan.

Following the Ministers speech, Senior Executive Director, Razzan, and Executive Director, Shinan presented the participants with details of legislative amendments brought about to the tourism and decentralization laws. Work that can be done in collaboration between the Ministry and the Councils and council level actions to be deployed on the islands were further discussed.  

Councilors eagerly shared their outlook on the prospects of the tourism future on the islands, which was received well by the Minister. Assuring his support at all times, Minster further expressed high hopes of seeing more and promising local tourism hubs coming up in various regions of the country.  

Down the pipeline, more sittings will be arranged by the dedicated unit created in the Ministry that will be overlooking work on the Tourism Diversification and Localization Project. They will work closely with councils.
