Maldives Has Fully Achieved Decentralized Governance, Says President Solih

Yesterday, across the Maldives, Councillors to Atoll, Island and City Councils and) the first publicly elected officials of WDC swore in to their newly designated roles. This event is marked historically as the first time more women to ascend to equal positions and ranks as men in governance.  

Addressing the nation, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih urged all newly-elected officials to safeguard the trust placed in them by the public through their support and votes, and to strive to bring progress and prosperity to the Atoll, Island or City that they represent. He confided in the women in top governance posts and stated confidence that it would be a boost to the national progress. 

President Solih also advised officials to prioritize the happiness and welfare of their constituents and to heed their requests and advice in creating development plans. He stated that it is the primary duty of every councillor is to prioritise the welfare of their constituents to ensure growth and progress to their cities and islands according to the National Development Plan. 

The statement also highlighted the ongoing Covid19 pandemic in the country and President Solih called upon all newly-elected officials to engage further in containing the spread of the virus and to pay special attention to stricter enforcement of the precautionary measures put in place to protect to public. 

In his statement, President Solih remarked that the day would be chronicled as a shining milestone in the Maldives' history - the day when the country finally fully achieved decentralized governance.
