Condemning the Terror Attacks on Speaker of Parliament, President Instructs Further Strengthening Security

On the night of May 6, 2021, a terrifying and heinous terrorist attack was aimed at the Speaker of the Parliament and Former President, Mohamed Nasheed. He, along with a number of innocent others, sustained serious injuries following the explosion that was planned and blasted outside of his residence.

In a meeting held yesterday, The Cabinet has condemned the targeted attacks in the strongest terms. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih described it as a cowardly act and deliberated further with the Cabinet regarding the latest cautionary steps being taken in expediting the investigation.

The Cabinet also discussed ways of strengthening and ensuring the safety and security of the public which was in lines with the President issuing security related instructions to the Attorney General of the Maldives earlier in the day. In his direction, President asked the AGoM to amend necessary laws to strengthen the security and protection provided to the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice of the Maldives, including the designation of their official residences.
