Celebrating an Unstoppable Army on World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day

Today, May 8 is celebrated around the world as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. Today is a day to celebrate the selfless principles, values, history and impact of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement for over one and a half centuries.

The world is a vulnerable place, as demonstrated by the most recent global pandemic and at times of such challenges, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement across the globe has shown extraordinary commitment and achievement in building through countless acts of kindness from one person to another in communities large and small across the world.

The nation of Maldives may be one of the tiniest in the world, but the volunteers of the Maldivian Red Crescent have donated their big hearts and goodwill to the community at times of crisis time and again. Despite big and small hurdles challenging them along the way, an army of unstoppable humanitarians has stood head-strong and shown resilience in providing care and support to the vulnerable in communities.

Throwing light to the recent Covid19 pandemic in the Maldives, brave volunteers have worked day and night, tirelessly in the field of operation, providing services that none of us imagined having to do beforehand. They have helped in the transfer of Covid19 patients without hesitation, distributed care packages to homes during national lockdowns, remained in the forefront continuously throughout the crisis and extended psychological support to those mentally affected, and even broken the language barrier and committed to helping migrant workers in the Maldives, to name a few.

Today, we salute the team of unstoppable volunteers making up the Maldivian Red Crescent movement, along with the millions who have joined to contribute from around the world, and humbly extend our gratitude from the bottom of our hearts for the unvaluable efforts they have been putting into making the world a better place, one kind act at a time. Be it any crisis, a world pandemic or something even more terrifying, you have assured us that we can count on you. Thank You, countless times.
